Tips for Searching the Catalog and Databases


PART ONE: FINDING BOOKS, etc.

Click on Find books, videos & more on the library homepage (http://library.uwsp.edu)

 
 

·         Find books, videos & more  ß Search the UWSP catalog

·         New library materials

·         Other libraries

 

Keyword search (and/or /not) tips:

 

·         Use quotation marks to enclose a phrase: 

o   “scholarship of teaching and learning”

 

·         Use and to connect terms:  

o   teaching and research

 

·         Use ? to find term variants:

o   teach? will find teach, teacher, teaching, etc. 

 

Subject heading search tips:

 

·      This is a great method for finding UWSP library books, DVDs, etc., on a particular subject, but its success depends on using the right terminology.

 

·         Recommended subject headings include:

 

o   College teaching

o   Learning and scholarship

o   Effective teaching

o   Education, Higher - Research

 

Note the call number (which indicates location) and status (is it checked out?)

 

            Books with call numbers beginning A-G are on 3rd floor

            Books with call numbers beginning H-PS are on 4th floor

            Books with call numbers beginning PT-Z and all oversize books are on 5th floor

 

Bring the book(s) to Main Circulation (in the lobby) for check-out.

 

If UWSP does not have the book that you seek, select Other Libraries (upper left of catalog screen), and request the book from a UW System Library (Universal Borrowing).


PART TWO: JOURNAL ARTICLES

 
 

·         Article QuickSearch

·         Find article databases ß for known databases

·         Browse databases A-Z

·         Article databases by subject  ß to identify databases

·         Journal titles A-Z ß does UWSP have journal?

Click on Find article databases to search databases known to you.  For SoTL scholarship, you might try Academic Search Elite, ERIC, or the Professional Development Collection (all from EBSCOhost).

 o   These can be searched simultaneously (click on Choose Databases to select them).

o   Select the parameters that are important (type of publication, peer-reviewed, etc.)

o  
Advanced searches permit one to tailor the search (e.g., term must appear in abstract)o   If no full text is present, click on the  to see if there is full text elsewhere, or if the library owns the item.

Click on Article databases by subject and select a subject area.  From the resulting screen, click on the name of the database that you wish to search.  Do the search.  If no full text is present, click on the  to see if there is full text elsewhere, or if the library owns the item.

Click on Journal titles A-Z to see if UWSP has or provides access to a particular journal.  Click on  for library location information or to access the journal.


PART THREE:  OTHER RESOURCES

On the library homepage, under Faculty Resources, click on SoTL Resources.

On the library homepage, under Guides, click on Virtual reference desk.  Select Education.

Use Ulrich’s International Periodical Directory (on shelves behind reference desk) to identify journals by subject, to see if they are peer reviewed, and to identify their indexes.
