CORE SoTL TITLES:

  • International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning:  An international, peer-reviewed, open access e-Journal published by the Center for Excellence in Teaching at Georgia Southern University Issues contain research articles, essays, personal reflections, as well as invited essays on SOTL. 
  • MountainRise An open, peer-reviewed, international electronic journal published twice a year by the Coulter Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning at Western Carolina University  (USA) for the purpose of being an international vehicle for SOTL.
  • The Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Designed to encourage all instructors to engage in the discussion of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and to become involved in the sharing of knowledge and learning about the teaching-learning process. Any report about an investigation into what works (or doesn't work) for a particular teaching-learning context will be considered for publication. Those submissions that include reflective commentary about the result of the investigation will be considered of greater value to our readership and more appealing for publication. The journal shall also consider submissions that offer opinion, thoughtful reflection, commentary, or theoretical ideas related to SOTL.
  • Active Learning in Higher Education: an international, refereed publication for all those who teach and support learning in Higher Education and those who undertake or use research into effective learning, teaching and assessment in universities and colleges. The journal has an objective of improving the status of teaching and learning support as professional activity.
  • College Teaching: an interdisciplinary forum on issues related to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This journal is interested in articles that explore: (1) aims and outcomes of teaching philosophy and practices that have significance beyond a specific discipline, including teaching of techniques, new classroom procedures, evaluations of innovative programs, and examination of contemporary developments; (2) teachers' roles, education, professional development, preparation to teach, and evaluation; and (3) incentives that encourage good teaching and ways good teaching is evaluated and rewarded.
  • Arts and Humanities in Higher Education: Publishes articles, reviews and scholarly comment relating to the arts and humanities in higher education serving the community of arts and humanities educators internationally.
  • Teaching in Higher Education: an international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that addresses the roles of teaching, learning and the curriculum in higher education in order to explore and clarify the intellectual challenges which they present. The journal aims to open up discussion across subject areas by involving all those who share an enthusiasm for learning and teaching.
  • Academic Exchange Quarterly an independent, double-blind-peer reviewed journal that publishes research, commentary, and other manuscripts that contribute to effective instruction and learning
  • inventio:  From George Mason University (Virginia, USA), the journal began as part of the Carnegie Foundation's Teaching Academy program and invited contributors to address definitions of the scholarship of teaching and looked at ways that campus practices, policies, and conditions work for or against a scholarship of teaching.  Regular issues feature peer-reviewed articles on instructional research, instructional philosophy, pedagogy, learning theory, and other significant issues related to excellence in learning and teaching. In addition to these feature articles, inventio also includes shorter articles on classroom practice and response and dialog sections about issues raised in the feature articles. 
  • Journal on Excellence in College Teaching: a peer-reviewed journal published at Miami University by and for faculty at universities and two- and four-year colleges to increase student learning through effective teaching, interest in and enthusiasm for the profession of teaching, and communication among faculty about their classroom experiences. Answers Ernest Boyer's (1990) call for a forum to present the scholarship of teaching and learning. The Journal provides a scholarly, written forum for discussion by faculty about all areas affecting teaching and learning, and gives faculty the opportunity to share proven, innovative pedagogies and thoughtful, inspirational insights about teaching.
  • Journal of Cognitive Affective Learning: A peer-reviewed, open-access journal devoted to the dissemination of high quality research, theories, and best educational practices that advance our understanding of the connection between the cognitive and affective in teaching and learning.
  • The National Teaching and Learning Forum: published six times per year, NTLF essays range from research-based pieces on learning to summaries of on-going problems.

SUBJECT SPECIFIC SoTL JOURNALS

ART & DESIGN:

  • Journal of Aesthetic Education (indexed in Project Muse from 2003):  Interdisciplinary journal that focuses on clarifying the issues of aesthetic education understood in its most extensive meaning. The journal thus welcomes articles on philosophical aesthetics and education, to problem areas in education critical to arts and humanities at all institutional levels; to an understanding of the aesthetic import of the new communications media and environmental aesthetics; and to an understanding of the aesthetic character of humanistic disciplines.
  • Studies in Art Education (indexed in Wilson Web from 2002) :  Quarterly journal which reports quantitative, qualitative, historical, and philosophical research in art education, including explorations of theory and practice in the areas of art production, art criticism, aesthetics, art history, human development, curriculum and instruction, and assessment.

COMMUNICATION:

  • Communication Education (indexed in EbscoHost from 1976): Articles in CE focus primarily on the role of communication in the instructional process and teaching communication in traditional academic environments. However, manuscripts related to teaching communication or the role of communication in the instructional process in non-traditional settings (e.g. training in business, health, and legal settings) are strongly encouraged.
  • Journalism and Mass Communication Educator (indexed in EbscoHost from 1995) :  Journal focuses on learning and teaching, curriculum, educational leadership, and related exploration of higher education within a context of journalism and mass communication.

ENGLISH:

  • College Composition and Communication (2nd flr - periodicals): Publishes research and scholarship in composition studies that support those who teach writing at the college level. The field of composition studies draws on research and theories from a broad range of humanistic disciplines while supporting a number of subfields of its own, such as technical communication, computers and composition, history of composition, writing center work, assessment, and others
  • College English  (2nd flr - periodicals) : Professional journal for the college scholar-teacher. CE publishes articles about literature, rhetoric-composition, critical theory, creative writing theory and pedagogy, linguistics, literacy, reading theory, pedagogy, and professional issues related to the teaching of English.
  • English Education (2nd flr - periodicals): Published by CEE, the Conference on English Education, and serves as a forum for discussion of issues related to (1) the nature of our discipline, especially as it spans all levels of instruction, and (2) the education and development of teachers of English at all levels.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE:

  • Foreign Language Annals:  Dedicated to the advancement of language teaching and learning, the journal seeks to serve the professional interests of classroom instructors, researchers, and administrators concerned with the learning and teaching of languages at all levels of instruction. The journal welcomes submissions of the highest quality that report empirical or theoretical research on language learning or teaching, that describe innovative and successful practice and methods, and/or that are relevant to the concerns and issues of the profession.

  • Journal of Environmental Education (indexed in Ebsco from 1994) :  Journal details how best to present environmental issues and how to evaluate programs already in place for primary through university level and adult students. University researchers, park and recreation administrators, and teachers from the United States and abroad provide new analyses of the instruction, theory, methods, and practices of environmental communication and education in peer-reviewed articles.
  • Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education: (Ejournal available free online from 1998) Journal covers all disciplines in the life sciences, natural resources, and agriculture. Educators in extension, universities, industry, administration, and grades K-16, share teaching techniques, concepts, and ideas. Written by and for educators, articles published include research, notes, case studies, software, letters, editorials, new features, profiles, and media reviews.
