Text-only summary: frequency of accessibility errors by error type, based on the March 2000 library data set

On eight of the thirteen UW campuses, the  majority of accessibility errors (within the March 2000 library data set) pertained to the lack of alternative text for images. The highest percentages were found at the UW-Green Bay (68 errors), the UW-River Falls (47 errors), the UW-Stout (50 errors) and the UW-Whitewater (28 errors).  All of the 25 errors on the UW-Milwaukee web pages and all of the 19 errors on the UW-Superior web pages consisted of images unaccompanied by alternative text. The proportion of this type of error was lowest among the library web pages at the La Crosse, Madison, Platteville and Stevens Point campuses.

For most of the UW campuses, second in relative frequency was the lack of alternative text for hot spots in client-side image maps.  This type of error occurred the most frequently at the UW-La Crosse (66 errors), the UW-Madison (21 errors), the UW-Platteville (16 errors) and the UW-Stevens Point (13 errors). The library pages at the UW-Eau Claire, the UW-Milwaukee, the UW-Parkside, the UW-Superior and the UW-Whitewater were free of this type of error.

The two types of accessibility errors referred to above, the lack of alternative text for images and for image-map hot spots, constituted over 90% of the "high-priority" errors identified by Bobby at twelve of the thirteen UW campuses (all but the UW-Eau Claire). Bobby detected occurrences of frame-related problems among the library web pages of three UW-Campuses: Eau Claire, Parkside and Stevens Point.
