How can you use the Assistive Technology Program?

After you have been approved to receive accommodations through Disabilites Serves, you can stop at the AT office room 430 LRC, call 346-4980 or email assisttech@uwsp.edu to set up an orientation session. This usually lasts about 45 minutes to one hour.

Once you are comfortable using the equipment on your own, you can come in during office hours, or use your after-hours pass. 


What is this program?

This program is a free service to help promote equal access to information and learning for students staff, and faculty with disabilities. Our  focus is to help students with special needs foster their independence, improve their educational experience and prepare them to be life long learners.

The Assistive Technology Program currently consists of four computer workstations, located in room 430A LRC. In addition to Office 2007 programs and Microsoft Internet Explorer, there are some specialized computer programs available .

Where is the program?

The lab is located at 430A in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). If you wish to use the lab, you must first set up an appointment for an orientation session.  Call the office at 346-4980 to make an appointment. After that, you may use the lab any time the library is open.

When is this service available?

The office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Once you are comfortable using the equipment on your own, you can come in during office hours, or use your after-hours pass. Click here to see the LRC's open hours.

Why have this service?

Students can use these tools to enhance their reading and writing abilities. The programs available are useful for students who are primarily aural learners, dyslexic vision-impaired, or those with Attention Deficit Disorder.  This is one more way in which the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point provides equal access of information to all students.

What other services does the office offer?

The office helps with ordering books from RFB&D, for the students that are approved for the service. Ask disabilities Services or the AT coordinator about this service.

Also available through the Assistive Tech office is the Lending AT Library.  The office has portable equipment to check-out on a short-term basis, as inventory permits. .  call, email, or stop in for details.

Some of the equipment include:

  • Laptop with Dragon Naturally Speaking, Kurzweil, Inspiration, & eClipse Reader

  • Quicktionaary Reading Pen

  • Franklin Speaking Dictionary

  • Victor Vibe reader

  • Voice-Activated tape recorder with counter

  • ClassMate Reader

  • Digital Voice Recorder

  • MPS player for text book listening.

These items are located in the AT office and checked out through the Library.

An appointment is needed for first time users of the equipment.
