Software and Equipment Currently Available.
Currently, we have the following available to use on campus:
- Kurzweil 3000 --Reading software with many
adjustable features, this program uses scanned text to make an image of the
text appear on the screen and optical character recognition to turn the text
into speech. This
software will also act as a screen reader (like JAWS, below) and allows you
to type into the program. It has many additional features that are
useful as study aids. There are three workstations in the Assistive
Technology lab with Kurzweil 3000.
- JAWS (Job Access With Speech) Screen Reader
-- This computer program tells the user what is on the computer screen. It
works with Internet browsers and word-processing programs, among other
programs.
- Windows XP Narrator -- Screen reading software
available on all computers with Windows XP. Go to "Start," "Programs,"
"Accessories," and "Accessibility." Click on Narrator (see XP
Magnifier.)
- Windows XP Magnifier -- All computers with Microsoft Windows XP
are equipped with a screen magnifier, along with other accessibility options. To
access the magnifier, go to "Start," "Programs,"
"Accessories," and "Accessibility." Under "Accessibility" you will
see the magnifier and an accessibility wizard.
- Dragon Naturally Speaking (Standard) -- This
software is called "Voice Recognition" software. Once the user has
programmed his or her voice into the computer workstation, it allows the
user to use the computer verbally. This includes using menu commands and
word processing. The user speaks into a microphone and the words appear on
the screen.
