PHYSICAL MARKING OF ITEMS

Books

  1. On the page after the title page, write the call number on the upper left corner in pencil.  It should be as how it appears on the book spine.  For any location other than Stacks, write the location above the call number.

If the length of a book exceeds 30 cm, it goes into Oversize (IMC has taller shelves so consult them before putting items in IMC Oversize).  Write a + sign above the call number to indicate that.

Examples:

Stacks:                       Reference                  Oversize IMC Books

E                                 Ref.                             +

183.7                          E                                 I.M.C.

.P25                            183.7                          E

2005                           .P25                            183.7

c. 2                              2005                          .P25

                                                         2005

  1. Put the barcode on the upper right corner of the back of book.

  1. Put all items for Stacks on the truck in the middle of Rm. 12 for student assistants to mark (printing call number labels and inserting security strips).

Items for locations other than Stacks go on the Reference cart.

Leave the book jacket in the item only when it’s an adult fiction title.  Save those good/interesting non-fiction book jackets in a box outside of the supply room (ask Acquisitions about the location of the box).  These jackets can later be used for displays put up by the Circulation.

Books with Computer Disks or CD-ROMs

On the actual 3 ¾ inch disc, use a Sharpie Ultra Fine Point permanent marker to write call number around the hole of the disc.  Include any location other than Stacks.

Computer disks

Put a PINK label on the front and back of the book with the note "Do not sensitize. Disk in back of book"

CD-ROMs

Put a GREEN label on the front and back of the book with note "Disc in back of book"

Stand Alone CDs, CD-ROMS, DVDs

            Disc

On the actual 3 ¾ inch disc, use a Sharpie Ultra Fine Point permanent black marker to write the call number around the hole of the disc.  Include any location other than Stacks.

            Case

Put barcode on the front top center of the case.

Kathy Wrycza prints the call number label to send to the IMC.  IMC puts the labels on various places depending on the medium.  Their practices are:

CDs: label goes on the upper right hand corner

CD-ROMs (IMC software): label goes on the lower left corner of the case.

DVDs: label goes on the spine of the case.

Videocassette Tapes

Two call number labels will be printed and send to IMC with the item.  IMC puts one on the cassette tape and the other on the spine of the case.

Rare Books

We do not make physical markings on a rare book, either newly cataloged or relocated.  Instead, write the location and call number on a blank index card.  In the case of newly cataloged items, also put the barcode on the card.

Insert the card in the book and send to Rare Books (usually put it on the Documents Mail cart by the mail box).

Wisconsin Documents

Wisconsin Documents come with call numbers on the items written by the Wis Doc Librarian (Cathy Palmini).  After cataloging, we just need to barcode the item and send it to Wis Docs (usually put on the Documents Mail cart by the mailbox).
