The Special Collections are groups of research materials which are set aside physically because of their uniqueness, age, or research value. Materials do not circulate and are open to patrons who have legitimate research interests. The library is committed to the preservation of historical materials and welcomes suggestions regarding donations of new collections.
The University Library offers an Assassination Archive to researchers. The emphasis of this collection is the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This collection already has a unique comprehensive bibliography on file for the JFK assassination, compiled specifically for this Archive and covering the years 1964 to 1977. The Archive was created by a member of the UWSP History Department, Professor David R. Wrone, with major contributions from Harold Weisberg and James and Jennifer White. Some materials are restricted; you must make prior arrangements to use this collection. These materials do not circulate.
These materials have been set aside in this special collection for a variety of reasons: e.g. early date of publication, name of publisher, previous ownership, physical condition, and local importance. They are listed in the library's online catalog with the location note, "Rare Books," and are housed in a separate room on the sixth floor. These materials do not circulate and must be used in this department.
The Government Publications Department is an official depository for U.S. Census materials. As an affiliate member of the Wisconsin State Data Center, it provides public access to available census data.
As America's fact finder, the U.S. Census Bureau collects statistical information from all sectors of society to measure the social and economic conditions of the nation. Census facts are available on: Agriculture, Geography, Population, Business, Governments, Retail Trade, Construction, Housing, Service Industries, Manufacturing, Transportation, Foreign Trade, Mineral Industries, and Wholesale Trade.
The decennial Census of Population materials in our collection date back to the first enumeration of 1790. Other related materials in the department include reference sources, such as the Statistical Abstract of the United States, State and Metropolitan Area Data Book, and the County and City Data Book.
Throughout its history the federal government has published a great many materials on American Indian conditions, government relations and policies, history, treaties, and current Native American issues. In addition, there are many microfilm series and non-governmental publications housed in the Native American Collection of the Documents Library.
Among the more important government series are:
