CAROLE VAN HORN RETIRING FROM UWSP LIBRARY
Carole Van Horn, associate professor in the library and long time cataloger, automation librarian, and coordinator of library processing and technical services, will retire at the end of the semester. She began her career as a librarian at UWSP in 1973 in the cataloging department after completing an MS in library science at UW-Madison. She holds a second MS in natural resources from UWSP.
Van Horn was active from the beginning of the computer age at the library when the (paper) card catalog was reconfigured to an online catalog in the late 1970’s. She became automation librarian and was awarded two SPOC (Stevens Point Online Catalog) trophies by library administration for successfully navigating the library and campus through a maze of electronic catalog migrations. This culminated in the current Voyager system linked to the entire UW System and beyond. Carole’s initiative, persistence, and expertise had a major impact on the success of the UWSP library catalog. She has also been UWSP’s representative on the UW-System’s Library Automation Managers Committee.During most of her career Van Horn taught biology and natural resources students how to use library resources in their research as well as giving library instruction to classes in a variety of subject areas and has helped a myriad of students with research needs at the library reference desk. She also serves as library liaison to biology and natural resources departments. She has served on campus committees including 10 years of service on the Curriculum Committee.
Carole and her husband, retired biology professor Steve Van Horn, plan to continue to live on their hobby farm in Custer, while enjoying trips throughout the continent and overseas and spending time with their grown sons.
