The University Library and the University of Wisconsin System are pleased
to provide Worldwide Web access to the Encyclopжdia Britannica
(Britannica Online). Britannica Online is the award-winning World Wide
Web information service provided by Britannica Advanced Publishing,
Inc., an Encyclopжdia Britannica company. First offered by subscription
to academic institutions in the fall of 1994, it was the first
encyclopedia on the World Wide Web. It consists of a fully searchable
and browsable collection of authoritative references, including
Britannica's latest article database, hundreds of articles not found in
the print Britannica, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (Tenth
Edition), the Britannica Book of the Year, and thousands of links to
other World Wide Web sites selected by Britannica editors.
The Encyclopжdia Britannica is recognized as the world's most comprehensive reference product, a distinction it has held since its first publication in 1768. Advanced search and retrieval capabilities and the flexibility of the World Wide Web now make that resource even more powerful and easy to use.
