Jeff
Morin, Art and Design, in
collaboration with Steven Ferlauto, art director for the Berkley
Publishing Group in New York, has put together a bound portfolio of 26
engravings representing the Roman alphabet. The portfolio, The Sacred
Abecedarium, is now showing at the
Victoria and Albert Museum in London which houses the largest such
collection in the world. The engravings are also on display at the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A UPDC grant of $2,800 helped
fund the showings. The engravings also have been added to several
collections in the U.S. and Europe. A set of the engravings has been
donated to the University Library where it will be catalogued and kept
in the Rare Book Room located on the sixth floor. Twenty-six copies plus
five commemorative copies make up the entire collection printed on
handmade papers. The book contains 34 engravings that describe the
sacred geometric influence on the development of a Roman alphabet.
Ferlauto conducted the mathematical research over the past 16 years, and
Morin, through the use of collage and gouache (opaque watercolor),
interpreted the drawings. Both contributed text to the project.
