on Right to Privacy

Colleen Angel

Colleen Angel, Library Services Assistant Advanced in Reference and Interlibrary Loan, has published "The Right to Privacy" in the Journal of Information Ethics Vol. 9 No. 2 (Fall 2000): 11-25.

The Fall 2000 issue of the  Journal of Information Ethics is titled "New Challenges to Ethics and Law."  The co-guest editor, Tomas A. Lipinski of the Center for Information Policy Research at the School of Library and Information Science at UW-Milwaukee, describes Colleen's article in his Introduction:

"Colleen Angel, in "The Right to Privacy" establishes a sound review of privacy concepts and sets them in historical context.  After reviewing various and recent threats to privacy in the United States she asks, Is there a future for privacy?  As a partial answer she focuses on the potential role of professional organizations and education which is related to several other articles in this special issue.  Her approach is to sweep with broad brushes."

Colleen is a graduate of the School of Library and Information Science at UW-Milwaukee.  She has been nominated by the faculty of the School of Library and Information Science at UW-Milwaukee for membership in Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honor Society, and is the recipient of the Leland Burroughs Scholarship from the UWSP Division of Communication, where she is enrolled in the graduate Communications program. The scholarship recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in Communication.

While at UW-Milwaukee, Colleen's "The Right to Privacy" paper won her the Dean’s Best Paper Award at the School of Library and Information Science.  As quoted in the SLIS Update Newsletter, "she weaves discussion of both legal and philosophical works into a fine synthesis and produces a work that is exceptionally well documented, thoughtful and highly readable."
