Are you asking yourself "what the heck is "UB" and why should I care?" Is it (choose as many of the correct answers that apply):
A German submarine?
The affectionate nickname for the title character, "Uncle Buck," in John Candy's classic film of the same name?
Anyone whose first name begins with U and last name with B, as in "Uriah Birch?"
"Universal Borrowing, "a new library service that will allow you to CHECK OUT BOOKS FROM OTHER LIBRARIES RIGHT FROM YOUR DESK AND BE ABLE TO RECEIVE THEM IN ONLY 1-2 DAYS?
If you checked them ALL, you are truly gifted, as they are all correct. But let's cut to the chase, you know we're talking about Universal Borrowing! How do you cash in on this wonderful deal? (note: this is not available in stores!) Read on!
UWSP Students, Faculty, Academic Staff and Classified Staff are now able to:
- Borrow materials from other UW System campus libraries, right from their desktop or lab computer!
- In person, use their UWSP identification cards to checkout materials at other UW System libraries!
- In person, use their UWSP identification cards to check out materials from the Portage County Public Library!
How do you make a "UB" Request Online?
From the University Library's online catalog, select Multi-lib search:
Select the library (or libraries) catalog(s) you wish to search from the UW Universal Borrowing Libraries box. If you wish to search more than one catalog at a time, hold down the shift key and select all the library catalogs you want to search:
After you have connected, find the record of the item you wish to borrow, go to the top of the screen and select Requests:

At this time, you may need to enter your UWSP identification number and your last name:
The next screen will prompt you to Please Choose the Type of Request; just click on OK:
A Web Voyage form will appear. Enter your UWSP identification number. Make sure the library where you wish to pick up the item is selected. Make sure there is an item selected in the box above where you typed in your identification number. Click on Submit Request:

You will be notified of the arrival of your requested items either by email, telephone or by mail. The book will be held for you at the circulation desk of the library you chose as your Pick Up Library (this will normally default to your University Library) You will have seven days to pick up your requested items.
UWSP users can make UB transactions with the Portage County Public Library and all UW System libraries. Only UWSP users will be able to borrow from the Portage County Public Library (and Portage County Public Library patrons can only borrow from UWSP).
You can borrow books, most multimedia and most Government Documents. Some items, such as periodicals and those on reserve will not be available.
If you encounter problems or have questions, please contact Andy Pech at 715-346-2540 or visit him at the Main Circulation Desk in the lobby of the University Library. You can e-mail Andy at apech@uwsp.edu.
