Michael Dunbar’s River Crossing, the sculpture located at the East Plaza of the LRC, has been restored. |
River Crossing, commissioned through the Wisconsin Arts Board’s Percent for Art Program, was completed in 1989. Over the last decade, the sculpture fell into a state of decay, showing serious, unanticipated rust and weathering:

The sculpture was originally painted with rustoleum enamel industrial primer, with a final coat of custom mixed rustoleum in black and blue. When the artist was first contacted about plans to restore the work, he indicated that "Forest Green" might be a more appropriate color. In September of this year, the sculpture was enclosed in a shroud of scaffolding to begin the restoration. |

River Crossing was selected from ninety-one art works. Dunbar, an Illinois sculptor, is Administrator of the Illinois Art In Architecture Program, which oversees all artwork owned, purchased or restored by the state. In 1995 he co-founded the permanent outdoor sculpture exhibition "Pier Walk" at the Navy Pier, Chicago.
His work is displayed at locations that include the Navy Pier, the Krasl Art Center in Saint Joseph, Missouri, and the Wandell Sculpture Garden in Urbana, Illinois. In addition to UWSP, Dunbar's sculptures are also on permanent display at college campuses at the University of Notre Dame, the Ray Hartstein Campus of Oakton Community College in Skokie, Illinois, and at Southwestern Illinois College's Belleville campus.
