Malcolm Rosholt's Classic History of Portage County
Published as Electronic Book

A fine example of statewide library cooperation has resulted in the electronic publication of Malcolm Rosholt's Our County, Our Story: Portage County, WisconsinThe 600 page work was originally published in Stevens Point in 1959 by the Portage County Board of Supervisors.  Our County, Our Story was digitized by the South Central Library System (SCLS) in Madison. Funding was provided through the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning of the Department of Public Instruction by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant. The digitization contractor for the project was Northern Micrographics in LaCrosse. Project managers for SCLS were Deborah McCabe of the Portage County Public Library and Andy Barnett of the McMillan Memorial Library in Wisconsin Rapids. Web hosting and file and server maintenance are provided by the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point University Library.

Born in 1907, scholar, author, historian, and journalist Malcolm Rosholt spent most of his life in Rosholt, Wisconsin, a village named after his grandfather.  Before World War II he served as a journalist/editor of a Shanghai newspaper, and was later commissioned by the Army Air Corps and served from 1943-45 under Claire Chennault with the famous Flying Tigers-14th Air Force in China.  A 1931 graduate of St. Olaf College, Rosholt's interest in state and local history has led to a large volume of books and articles about the region and the state, on topics ranging from logging and railroads to frontier life.  He has also published many titles based on his experiences in China, including a novel about the Air Force Flying Tigers and a biography of Madame Chiang Kai-shek.  A number of his publications were co-authored with his wife, Margaret.  Malcolm Rosholt currently lives at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King.
