ANDREE HOWARD

(1910 – 1968)

Born October 3, 1910 in London, Howard was a dancer and choreographer, and one of the early members of the Marie Rambert and Sadler Wells companies in London. She choreographed over 30 ballets in her lifetime. She danced for Ballet Theatre in New York (which eventually became the American Ballet Theatre), in 1940 for the company’s debut season, in “Death and the Maiden” and “Lady into Fox.” Soon thereafter, she returned to London to continue her work as a choreographer for the London Ballet, and was most well known for her piece, “La Fete Etrange,” which was based on the novel Le Grand Meaulness. Howard died in April 1968 from an overdose of barbiturate poisoning. Although Howard faded actively out of the dance world toward the end of her life, her work is still appreciated and studied today.
