Reserve Collection

The purpose of the Reserve collection is to provide students with access to course-associated materials, either required or recommended, as requested by instructors. It is comprised of hard copy and electronic materials. The hard copy materials circulate for shorter periods of time than the general library collection to assure accessibility to all who need them. Items on Reserve are arranged alphabetically by academic department, then by course number and instructor’s name; for example, Accounting 210 - Smith, Biology 100 - Barlow, Biology 100 - Meyers. Electronic Reserve materials can be accessed from remote locations and are limited to faculty and UWSP students enrolled in courses using E-Reserve.

Accessing E-Reserve

  • To access E-Reserve from the library Homepage, click on E-Reserve under Library Services.

  • To access E-Reserve from MyPoint, click on E-Reserves under Other Library Information on the Library page.

  • E-Reserve can also be accessed from D2L by clicking on the E-Reserve tab on the top of the page.

  • To login to E-Reserve, enter your login and password. For help with logon or access problems, please contact Denise Heimstead (ext. 4428).

Loan Periods

Reserve materials can be checked out at the Main Circulation desk; there is a check out limit of two items per course at a time. Instructors placing items on Reserve determine how long materials can be borrowed. If you cannot find the materials you are looking for, please ask the Main Circulation staff to assist you.

Photocopies

Students are permitted to make photocopies of Reserve materials within the guidelines of Copyright Law. Guidelines are posted near the photocopiers. A photocopier with a scanner is located near the Reference Desk on the first floor where students may photocopy or scan readings; other photocopiers are available throughout the Library.

Renewals

Reserve materials may be renewed ONCE. Some materials may be renewed more than once if other copies are available and are not in high demand. Renewals may be requested by phone (ext. 2540), or by e-mail: libcirc@uwsp.edu.

Overdues & Fines

To encourage the prompt return of Reserve materials, which are in high demand, fines are more stringent than in other parts of the Library and are as follows:

LOAN PERIOD

OVERDUE FINE

2-HOUR (overnight) materials 1¢ per minute
1-day $2.00 per day overdue
3-day $2.00 per day overdue
7-day $2.00 per day overdue

You will be fined for lost or overdue materials. If you have lost materials you borrowed from Reserve, you will be billed the replacement cost of the item plus a processing fee. Overdue notices are sent out shortly after the material is due. Failure to receive a notice DOES NOT relieve the borrower of the obligation to return the material, or to pay the fines that have accrued. At the end of each semester, all delinquent fines are turned over to the cashier.

Returns

Reserve materials should be returned to the book slots to the right of the Main Circulation Desk. Materials returned before or after hours may be returned to the outside book drops on either end of the building. These drops are checked by Circulation Desk personnel; items borrowed from the Reserve department that are returned before 9:00 a.m. will be delivered to Reserve immediately. However, we cannot guarantee the materials returned later will be taken to these areas promptly.

Placing Items on E-Reserve

Items being placed on Electronic Reserve should be accompanied by an Electronic Reserve Request Form, which provides Reserve staff with the information they need to process requests in a timely manner.

The Reserve staff will scan, clean (remove black marks and straighten text), upload and maintain copyright.  We will assist you in finding alternative sources when Fair Use doesn’t apply.  Items posted on E-Reserve are compatible with Assistive Technology reading software.  Color scanning is also available.  We are happy to scan directly from the book or periodical, but photocopies and computer-generated attachments are also accepted.  All originals will be returned to the instructor upon completion of the request.

Candidates for E-Reserve include, but are not limited to: excerpts or chapters from books, journal articles, instructor-generated materials such as syllabi, lecture notes or study guides, as well as music and classroom lectures in MP3 or MP4 format.  Items available from the Library's databases are not candidates for E-Reserve - e.g., JSTOR, EBSCOhost or WilsonWeb.

Submitting requests before the term deadline guarantees that your Electronic Reserve requests will be processed by the first day of classes; however, faculty may submit requests at anytime throughout the semester.  All requests are processed in the order they are received, and as quickly as possible.  The Reserve Department typically experiences a backlog at the beginning of each term due to demand, however, most material is usually posted within 24 hours of submission.

E-Reserve Guidelines

To assist students in identifying the correct readings, when completing the request form, please list each E-Reserve entry in the same order as on your syllabus, or how you want it to appear to your students. For your convenience, Reserve staff can scan items directly from the book or periodical.

If submitting photocopies:

  • All copies should be as free of gray shadow areas as possible, with minimal black margins and center stripes.

  • Copies should be printed on 8 1/2 X 11 inch paper with at least a 1/2 inch margin on all four sides

  • Instructors wishing to place items on E-Reserve should consult our Copyright Policy before placing their request.

Chapters from books:

  • Complete works will not be scanned into E-Reserve.

  • The Library permits the use of the following copyrighted materials as they fall under Fair Use guidelines: one chapter or not more than 10% of a book, one poem, short story or essay from a single volume, one drawing, cartoon or picture from a book.

  • Citation information must be included on the first page of all photocopies. Not including this information will delay processing. Cite author/editor, title, edition, publisher, place of publication and copyright date. This information may be supplied by photocopying the page where the copyright notice appears or by writing it on the first page of the document.

Articles from journals:

  • The Library permits the use of the following copyrighted materials as they fall under Fair Use guidelines: one article from a single issue of a journal, one drawing, cartoon or picture from a single issue of a journal.

  • Citation information must be included on the first page of all photocopies. Not including this information will delay processing. Cite title of article, author, journal title, volume, issue (if there is one), publisher and date. This information may be supplied by photocopying the appropriate page from the journal or by writing it on the first page of the document.

Accessing E-Reserve for Faculty

The Instructor's page lists all documents in numerical then alphabetical order that an instructor has posted on Electronic Reserve, and the courses being taught for the current semester.  Checking the corresponding box will activate a document for a particular course and section.

  • To access E-Reserve from the Library Homepage, click on E-Reserve under Library Services.

  •  To access E-Reserve from myPoint, click on E-Reserves under Other Library Information on the Library page of myPoint.

  •  E-Reserve can also be accessed from D2L by clicking on the E-Reserve tab on the top of the page.

Creating Links in D2L to Readings in E-Reserve

Instructor's using D2L can create links to readings in E-Reserve.  To locate the link that corresponds to the desired reading, simply find the reading on the Instructor's page and hover over the link with your cursor.  On the bottom left corner of the page you will see the address to use to access that file.  Place this address in D2L and you will create a link directly to that reading in E-Reserve.

Placing Items on Hard Copy Reserve

Items being placed on Hard Copy Reserve should be accompanied by a Hard Copy Reserve Request Form, which provides Reserve staff with the information needed so that requests can be processed in a timely manner.  Instructors wishing to place items on Reserve should consult our Copyright Policy before placing their request (see below).

Faculty are encouraged to submit requests by the posted deadline to ensure items are available on Reserve by the first day of classes; however, requests can be made anytime throughout the semester.  Requests placed after the deadline may take up to three days to be processed.

Candidates for Reserve include, but are not limited to: library-owned books, personal copies of books, past exams, homework assignments and solutions, photocopies of items not eligible for E-Reserve, CD's and textbooks (please consult Text Rental if you wish to place copies of textbooks on Reserve).  A maximum of three textbook copies per class may be placed on Reserve.

For your convenience, the Reserve department will retrieve any library-owned items requested for Reserve.

At the end of each term, all personal copies will be returned to the instructor and all library-owned items will be returned to the collection.

Videos and DVD's may be placed on Reserve in the IMC, 3rd floor of the library.  Please contact Gail Allen (346-4246) for more information.

Ordering New Items to be Placed on Reserve

To order new items that you wish to have placed on Reserve, submit a completed library request form for each title to the Acquisitions department.  Reserve materials must be approved and signed off by the department library representative.  Click here for online order form.

Note that the basis for Reserve book purchase is 1 copy per 15 students.  Reserve books will not be purchased for semester-long checkout for single students (as a substitute for text rental or purchasing a book by students).  The charge-back policy for Reserve books is as follows: copy 1,3,5+ = departmental allocation, copy 2,4 = Reserve funds.

Copyright Policy

The policy governing electronic reserves, as with all reserves, is based on the provisions of fair use of the United States Copyright Act of 1976. Section 107 of the Copyright Act expressly permits the making of multiple copies for classroom use. There are four factors in determining fair use:

  • the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit education purposes;

  • the nature of the copyrighted work;

  • the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole;

  •  and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Purpose: The Library course reserves provides access to supplementary course materials in support of the University's academic mission.

Methods of Access: Current access to the system is limited to faculty and to UWSP students enrolled in courses that use electronic reserve.

Reproduction of Copyrighted Materials for Reserves

Materials will only be placed on Reserve at the request of faculty.
Course Reserve materials are intended educational use only. The use of Course Reserve materials is strictly non-profit.

The Library permits the use of the following copyrighted materials as they fall into fair use guidelines: books the Library owns (print reserve only), personal copies, e.g. textbooks (print reserve only), one article from any one journal (journals, newspapers, magazines, etc., one chapter or not more than 10% from a book the Library owns, one poem, short story, or essay from a single volume whether or not from a collected work, one drawing, cartoon or picture from a book, one journal, one periodical, or one newspaper issue.
